Road Trip Day #22, Sidmouth to the North Cornwall Coast.

Monday morning in Sidmouth we go to Somewhere Someday which is Sandy’s good friend Janine Raby’s sister Jamie’s tearoom.  Jamie is an amazing person and her tearoom is relatively famous in this very precious seaside village.  She is such a free spirit and has traveled extensively and has even climbed to the base camp of Mt. Everest.  She and her partner, Ben, just welcomed a beautiful baby boy Lennox into the world and are living a pretty idyllic life in this town of Sidmouth.  What a very special side trip for us.  We met a new friend in Jamie, met her mother Jane and her partner Ben, but best of all was meeting their sweet son Lennox at nine weeks of age.

After enjoying Jamie’s delicious home made fruit scones with clotted cream and jam we bid them farewell and drive 1 & ½ hours to our next destination, a farm house Airbnb on the north Cornwall coast.

After settling in to our Airbnb we drove to Port Isaac which we discovered was the home of Doc Martin and also scenes from Poldark.  We are the only tourists in this town who have not heard of or watched either show.  Most tourists are here for that reason only.  Our first order of business is to have a delicious meal from the sea at Fresh from the Sea.  Sandy has a local lobster and Jim has their crab meat sandwich.  Both are memorable and highly recommended.  Port Isaac is a small fishing village on the Atlantic coast of North Cornwall England.  It’s Tudor pier was constructed during the reign of Henry VIII but is now a strong new sea wall.  The village center dates from the 18th century.  While exploring the town we decided to sample the ice cream, a very rare treat for us.  The woman who sold it to us remarked about Sandy’s Boston Marathon jacket saying that her daughter had run Boston the year of the bombing while a student at Harvard.  We have had the nicest conversations with so many friendly and helpful people on this road trip.

On returning home we spoke to our Airbnb host about our experiences and she advised us that Doc Martin was on the telly this evening, so our one and only watching of Doc Martin was in Cornwall where it is filmed.
