Jim’s firstborn nephew, Paul Steen and his wife Alicia came to visit us on December 19 and on December 22 we all flew to Oaxaca to meet up with our youngest daughter Emily and her partner Tim who had been in Mexico City for the past week. Paul and Alicia are picked up at 5am by Bajiogo, a highly recommended airport shuttle service. We are picked up by another van at 5:10am. Paul and Alicia are going go Queretaro to fly their Mooney to Oaxaca and we are going to Guanajuato International Airport to fly to Mexico City and then on to Oaxaca.
It was a freezing cold morning and inside the airport was even colder than outside. Fortunately they had a Priority Pass Lounge which was a little warmer for us to wait in. Leaving Guanajuato. While waiting in the AMEX lounge in Mexico City, Jim realized that he had booked our next flight into Huatulco in the state of Oaxaca rather than to the CITY of Oaxaca. Huatulco is a beach resort city about a six hour drive from Oaxaca and all flights from Huatulco to Oaxaca go through Mexico City. Since our checked bag was already on the plane we elected to fly on to Huatulco and ask Paul to come and pick us up there in his Mooney. Disembarking the plane in Huatulco, hot and dry here. Sure enough, we are NOT in Oaxaca. Here comes Paul to the rescue. This is not Sandy’s first co-pilot assignment. 2006 in New Zealand over Milford Sound. First landing attempt, Paul was waved off by the tower as there was a jet that was slow to take off. Perfect landing the second time. We made it to Oaxaca, thanks to Paul.
