Mexico City Reprise

We first went to Mexico City in January of 2019 as an alternative to Spain. We had planned on getting a visa for Spain but were thwarted at the last minute and Jim made a middle of the night executive decision to divert to Mexico City instead. We arrived mid January and stayed until mid April for a total of three full months. Our first guest, Walter LaLiberte arrived on February 6 and we subsequently entertained another 13 houseguests in spite of the very short notice. During our current two month stay we will be hosting 18 guests total.

The night before our flight to Mexico we had a lovely lunch with some of Sandy’s running “sole” sisters. The two gals at the end of the table (Deb on the left and Gayle on the right) will be running the Tokyo Marathon on March 1 to complete their 6th World Majors, and for Gayle her 7th. Good luck girls we will be cheering you on in Mexico.
Leaving the snow and cold of Newport, driving to Boston for our early morning flight and the lunch pictured above.
We checked in for our 9:30am Aeromexico flight at 7:15am.
After check in we headed to the lounge to have coffee and do our morning dueling NYT crossword puzzle.
It was a smooth take off as you can see in this video.
We were happy to leave the cold and snow behind.
Our first glimpse of Mexico City from the air.
Welcome to Mexico
Our apartment in the Polanco neighborhood of Mexico City is on the ninth floor with spectacular views of the city.
Lovely deck and charcoal grill.
Night view from our living room windows.
Nicely equipped kitchen.
Dinning Room
Table for our jigsaw puzzle, first 1,500 piece puzzle that we have done. Mt. Fiji.
Master bedroom with ensuite shower bathroom.
Master bath with a view.
Master dressing room with robes provided.
King size guest bedroom #1
and guest bedroom #2.
Guest bathroom with tub shower and complimentary toiletries.
Our building. We are the second balcony from the top.
Lots of sidewalks restaurants and cafes right on our street.
The famous Nobu chain restaurant is right across the street.
Beautiful Lincoln Park outside our front door.
On our third day here our friends Ivonne and Miguel Kelly met us here for brunch. They live just a few blocks away.
Miguel was our taxi driver to the Emergency Room when Jim had his heart attack and 911 ambulance never came. He was also the one responsible to get the Cath lab team for Jim. We call him Saint Miguel.
Shops with cute Easter display.
We took a walk to Chapultepec Park which is a huge green space in the heart of Mexico City that has an internationally renowned zoo, monuments, water fountains, museums, a castle and an amusement park. There are also many vendors selling their wares from carts along the walkway.
Here is a video of the lovely lake where you can rent boats.
The name Chapultepec comes from the Aztec word for Grasshopper.
Monument to Los Ninos Heroes. The Ninos (children) Heroes refers to the six Mexican military cadets who were killed in the defense of Mexico City during the Battle of Chapultepec, one of the last major battles of the Mexican-American War, 1847. The oldest cadet was only 19.
Getting ready for Valentine’s Day.
We try to get in a 3-5 mile walk each day. Our destination on this day was to find a jigsaw puzzle. This is a very high end mall. We found a puzzle here at the FAO Schwartz store.
Some interesting architecture along our walk.
All the high end stores are just a block away on Avenida Presidente Masaryk which has been compared to Rodeo Drive in LA or Champs Elysee in Paris.
The city has a lovely shaded pedestrian walkway that runs between the six lanes of traffic going in either direction on Avenida de la Reforma.
One day we took a 6 mile walk to the neighborhood where we lived 7 years ago. This was the door to our building in the La Condesa neighborhood.
Our favorite restaurant in La Condesa and where we had our first meal in Mexico. The Tacos al Pastor were so good.
Took us about 10 days to complete this 1500 piece puzzle.

And so that wraps up our first two weeks in Mexico City. Since we lived here for 3 months seven years ago our stay this time around is much more relaxed and less touring. Our days have been mostly spent enjoying the Winter Olympic highlights and oh yes watching the Super Bowl 😫. Our son Geoffrey and family arrives today so our next blog will be filled with activities we will do with them during the week they are here.
