As we have said many times, the leading joy of our itinerant lifestyle is having family and friends come to visit. That being said, the ultimate joy is having our eldest child and husband visit. Jennifer and Rob provide us with a home base in Newport Rhode Island where we keep our clothes and forty boxes of goods that we chose to keep after completely consolidating our Boston estate in November of 2020. We do get to spend some time with them every three months when we return to New England for numerous appointments and to change our wardrobe before heading out to our next destination. Jen and Rob have visited us in Paris, London, New Orleans and now San Diego. They are here for a few days around New Years.
Our first full day with them they booked a tour of the San Diego Bay. We saw many Naval Vessels
This a video of going under the Coronado Bridge. The Coronado bridge has a mission bell design. Ronald Regan as governor of California was the first person to drive across this bridge when it opened in 1969.Dole Container ships in the port of San Diego can hold 800 containers. All of them are refrigerated boxes known as “reefers” and each 40 foot reefer can hold 1,000 boxes, and each box holds 100 bananas.Nice views of the San Diego architecture from the water. We went to La Jolla on a day when king tides, high surf and gusty winds made for wild waves that we enjoyed watching.

Great Polynesian food and amazing views.Known for its world famous Mai Tais which are pure alcohol. The waitress gave us a disclaimer before bringing the drinks. Once bought, it is yours with NO returns. You can add pineapple juice to dilute it though and you are limited to only two per customer. We ended up getting a glass of pineapple juice to dilute them. Jim was driving and did not have one.
And so ends 2023, spending some very good times with friends and family. We started in New Orleans and moved on to Japan for the cherry blossoms. We then did a short trip with friends to the Scilly Islands followed by our granddaughter Katia’s HS graduation in Florida and a weekend Tanglewood trip with friends. We then managed a weekend in Denver with all of Jim’s offspring before heading to Munich to spend the summer in Bavaria. We returned to New England for a wedding in Ithaca before going to Portugal to walk another Camino de Santiago from Porto to Santiago Spain with Karen and Bill Boyle. We then managed another wedding in Deerfield, another trip to Florida to see Jason, Catarina and family and then a Steen family reunion weekend in North Carolina and a weekend with more friends and family in New York City before escaping to San Diego. What a great year we have had. We had no idea that we did so much until we just reviewed it for this summary.
